Fifth Jan. 6 anniversary: GOP avoids commemoration as Trump's pardons and revisionism define the day

On the fifth anniversary of the January 6 Capitol attack, House Republicans avoided any commemoration of the insurrection while Democrats marked the occasion by condemning President Trump's historical revisionism. A plaque intended to honor law enforcement from that day remains in storage due to GOP objections. Rep. Frank Pallone commemorated the anniversary by condemning Trump's pardoning of over 1,500 rioters, including Julian Khater who assaulted Officer Brian Sicknick, and urged Trump and Speaker Johnson to cease their 'campaign of historical revisionism.' Trump made no direct statement marking the anniversary, instead focusing on his threats against Greenland and the aftermath of the Venezuela invasion. The contrast was stark: the party that once called January 6 a dark day now refuses to acknowledge it, while the president who incited the attack has been rewarded with a second term and used his power to free those who beat police officers defending the Capitol.
