Jan. 6 Committee issues criminal referrals for Trump to DOJ on four charges
The House January 6 Committee voted unanimously to refer Trump to the Department of Justice for criminal prosecution on four charges: obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to make a false statement, and inciting or assisting an insurrection. The referrals — the first ever against a former president — concluded 18 months of investigation and documented Trump's central role in the multi-pronged effort to overturn the 2020 election. While non-binding, they provided a roadmap for prosecutors.
"The Committee believes that more than sufficient evidence exists for a criminal referral of former President Trump for assisting or aiding and comforting those at the Capitol who engaged in a violent attack on the United States." — January 6 Committee final report, December 19, 2022
