Trump says he won't endorse 'sick, demented or deranged' lawmakers who oppose SAVE Act in social rant

President Donald Trump warned Tuesday that he will not endorse any lawmaker for reelection who votes against the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act.

The Republican-endorsed SAVE America Act aims to create new barriers to voter registration in the U.S. The bill is a rebranded version of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, which has been circulating through Congress in some iteration for more than two years now.
Should the act be signed into law, it would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and impose stricter voter ID rules.
What documents will be considered as proof of citizenship?
Any Real ID would be acceptable under the act, including a U.S. passport, a birth certificate, a military ID, or a tribal ID. Around 12% of registered voters lack ready access to the necessary documents, a recent analysis by the Bipartisan Policy Center found. The think tank found that people with higher incomes and higher levels of education are more likely to have access to such documents.

How widespread is voter fraud in the U.S.?

The bill faces steep odds in the Senate, where it would need 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. While speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill, Senate Majority Leader John Thune was asked whether he's risking being on the wrong side of the president by opposing a filibuster to pass the bill. "We don't have the votes," said Thune.
"Either to proceed, get on a talking filibuster, or to sustain one if we got on it," he continued. "But that's just a function of math, and there isn't anything I can do about that."
"It’s about the math," Thune said. "And I’m, for better or worse, the one who has to be a clear-eyed realist about what we can achieve here." Earlier this year, the House passed the bill; however, it needs 60 votes or more in the Senate, where debate is likely to last many days.
