Trump does bizarre impression of Trans weightlifter in unhinged speech as he rambles about what Melania ‘hates’
Some social media users were left asking if anyone can 'figure out what the f*** he’s talking about' after the rambling 90-minute speech to fellow Republicans
Some were left asking if President Donald Trump was okay after he did a bizarre impression of a transgender athlete in front of massed Republican politicians.
The president's nearly 90-minute address to House Republicans [offered little in terms of fresh policy initiatives](https://www.themirror.com/news/politics/breaking-trump-continues-moan-not-1603643) or a unified new message for the year ahead. Instead, he wandered from defending his conduct during the Capitol riot five years ago to joking about adopting liberal positions to secure transgender votes, while making perplexing comments about Franklin Delano Roosevelt's wheelchair use.
Trump was [desperately trying to shore up Republican support](https://www.themirror.com/news/politics/donald-trump-makes-candid-admission-1603262) ahead of the midterms which many in the party fear he could lose.
"They say that when you win the presidency, you lose the midterms," Trump said during his remarks at the Kennedy Center, the performing arts center that his supporters recently renamed in his honor. "I wish you could explain to me what the hell is going on with the mind of the public."
During his speech he said that his wife Melania, dislikes his dancing and his impression of a weightlifting trans person.
Trump later said the first lady thinks “the weightlifting is terrible,” before launching into his bit. Grunting and gesturing, the president pretended to be a woman lifting weights.
“Drops the thing, walks off the stage crying. Her mother’s crying, her father’s crying,” he said.
Then he goes on to imitate a transgender person, saying: “Guy gets up, he’s [asked], ‘Have you lifted before?’ ‘A little bit.’ And he walks up, bing.”
The president imitated a transgender weightlifter, easily lifting the weight.
“It’s crazy,” he added.
According to the president, Melania Trump thinks the dancing he does at his rallies is not presidential.
“She actually said, ‘Could you imagine FDR dancing?’ She actually said that to me,” Trump said. “And I said there’s a long history that perhaps she doesn’t know.”
Trump did try to rally the conference at times, asserting that his first year back in office was so successful that Republicans should win in November on that basis alone. He briefly touched on Venezuela and the dramatic capture of deposed president Nicolás Maduro — calling it “brilliant, tactically.” He talked about money coming into the U.S. through tariffs and direct investment, and negotiations to bring down drug prices.
“You have so many good nuggets. You have to use them. If you can sell them, we’re going to win,” Trump said. He claimed that “we’ve had the most successful first year of any president in history and it should be a positive.”
House Republicans convened as they launch their new year agenda, with health care issues in particular dogging the GOP heading into the midterm elections. Trump declined to publicly counsel GOP lawmakers on how they should handle this week’s vote — pushed by Democrats and a handful of Republicans who broke from their party -- to extend insurance subsidies that expired at year’s end, or on how to deal with the next potential government shutdown just weeks away, all with a narrower majority.
