"As always, he is telling us what the plan is," said one critic. "We must take it seriously."
US President [Donald Trump](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/donald-trump) has spent his second term [threatening](https://www.commondreams.org/news/greenland-pm-responds-to-trump-threats) takeovers of various other countries, from [Canada](https://www.commondreams.org/news/mark-carney-trump) and [Cuba](https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-take-cuba) to [Greenland](https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-renews-threat-of-military-force-to-annex-greenland), and on Monday he [shared](https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/117230286557431140) on [social media](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/social-media) a map that fueled fresh fears of his imperialist "[Donroe Doctrine](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/donroe-doctrine)."
The map on Trump's Truth Social platform shows the US flag over not only the [United States](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/united-states) but also Canada, [Greenland](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/greenland), Iceland, Mexico, and multiple countries in [Central America](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/central-america) and the Caribbean.
The post was swiftly condemned across platforms, with Congressman Jonathan Jackson (D-Ill.) [declaring](https://x.com/rep_jackson/status/2097038681412391253) that "this is unacceptable."
Journalist Stephen Robinson [wrote](https://x.com/SER1897/status/2097028077968863297) on X that "another world leader posting something like this would have to apologize before their immediate removal."
Amy McGrath, a retired Marine fighter pilot and [former](https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/5885718-booker-kentucky-democratic-senate-primary/) Democratic [US Senate](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/us-senate) candidate from Kentucky, [wondered](https://x.com/AmyMcGrathKY/status/2097006368272114142), "What would we do and say if the Chinese president posted a map of China taking over the Western Pacific?"
Carl Bildt, co-chair of the European Council on Foreign Relations and former prime minister of [Sweden](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/sweden), similarly [said](https://x.com/carlbildt/status/2096985818451910708): "What would happen if Xi Jinping posted a map where [China] has taken over all of East Asia, and [President Vladimir] Putin one of [Russia] having absorbed all of Western Europe? It would have been seen as either insane or dangerous—or both."
While some critics called Trump "[absolutely bonkers](https://x.com/Roshan_Rinaldi/status/2097029797939413003)" and "f*cking insane," Dr. Brian Goldman, a Canadian emergency physician who's also an author and broadcaster, [asserted](https://x.com/NightShiftMD/status/2097014545789124718): "That's not insanity. That's intention."
Democratic strategist Michelle Kinney agreed, [saying](https://x.com/MichelleKinney/status/2097016221111664991): "As always, he is telling us what the plan is. We must take it seriously."
Melanie D'Arrigo, executive director of the Campaign for New York Health, [suggested](https://x.com/DarrigoMelanie/status/2097013175757517178) that "the reason why [Republicans](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/republicans) attack education is so that people don't recognize the history that repeats itself."
Without directly mentioning Trump or his map, Mexican President Sheinbaum [said](https://x.com/Claudiashein/status/2096995458958712907) in Spanish on Monday, "We reaffirm that Mexico is neither nor will be a colony or protectorate of any foreign country. Proudly we are a free, independent, and sovereign nation."
While Trump is a prolific poster, the map followed a series of posts from Sunday—including other maps and images produced with artificial intelligence—that led progressive influencer Harry Sisson to conclude that the president was "having a mental health episode online" and call for his removal from office.
"This man is unwell. 25th Amendment NOW," Sisson [said](https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-faces-fresh-calls-for-removal-over-ai-fueled-posting-frenzy/), cataloging posts on a range of topics, from Trump's recent [renaming](https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-lake-america) of Lake Ontario amid [tough](https://www.commondreams.org/news/canadians-us-enemy-poll) [trade](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/trade) talks with Canada, to the suggestion that New Mexico should be dubbed "New America."
The latter was [ripped](https://www.thedailybeast.com/manic-trump-80-unravels-in-crazed-map-changing-meltdown/) by several Democratic officials, including New Mexico's governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, who responded that her state's name "isn't up for debate—it's been ours since before the United States existed."
"What is up for debate? Who's showing up for working families," she continued. "While the president tries to distract Americans from his disastrous war in Iran, gas prices keep soaring. Americans are also spending more at the grocery store, losing access to [healthcare](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/healthcare) and wondering if they'll ever be able to afford a home. Under Democratic leadership here in New Mexico, we're providing families with free childcare and college, protecting access to healthcare, and investing in housing. While the [White House](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/white-house) wastes time coloring on maps, Nuevo México is busy doing the work."
In addition to waging an illegal war on Iran, Trump this term has invaded [Venezuela](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/venezuela) to [abduct](https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-bombs-venezuela) President Nicolás Maduro and [take](https://www.commondreams.org/news/chris-wright-venezuela-oil) control of the country's [oil](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/oil) reserves, [become](https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-bombs-nigeria) the US commander-in-chief to bomb the most countries, and [killed](https://www.commondreams.org/news/boat-strikes) over 225 people by blowing up boats allegedly smuggling drugs through international waters. He's also threatened to [seize](https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-panama-canal-invasion-plan) the Panama Canal and possibly attack nations including [Colombia](https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-rubio-cuba-mexico) and [Mexico](https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-rubio-cuba-mexico).
As Iran has responded to Trump's war by restricting traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, the president has teased [declaring](https://www.commondreams.org/news/donald-trump-strait-of-hormuz) the key waterway a US territory and [naming](https://www.commondreams.org/news/iran-war-trump-strait) it after himself. He's also [dubbed](https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-gulf-of-america) the Gulf of Mexico "the Gulf of America" and [fought](http://www.commondreams.org/news/kennedy-center-trump-name) to put his name on the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in [Washington](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/washington), DC.
With the US [midterm elections](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/midterm-elections) less than two months away, some Democrats in Congress have stepped up their critiques of Trump's foreign policy—including a delegation of progressive congressional lawmakers and candidates who headed to [Uruguay](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/uruguay) last month for the third [Pan-American Congress](https://panamericancongress.org/panam_en/).
Shortly after that gathering, delegation member Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (D-Ill.) [stressed](https://x.com/RepChuyGarcia/status/2091978167686955500) that "[progressives](https://www.commondreams.org/tag/progressives) reject the violent, imperialistic Donroe Doctrine, and believe in a foreign policy rooted in cooperation, diplomacy, and sovereign equality."
Dear Common Dreams reader, It’s been nearly 30 years since I co-founded Common Dreams with my late wife, Lina Newhouser. We had the radical notion that journalism should serve the public good, not corporate profits. It was clear to us from the outset what it would take to build such a project. No paid advertisements. No corporate sponsors. No millionaire publisher telling us what to think or do. Many people said we wouldn't last a year, but we proved those doubters wrong. Together with a tremendous team of journalists and dedicated staff, we built an independent media outlet free from the constraints of profits and corporate control. Our mission has always been simple: To inform. To inspire. To ignite change for the common good. Building Common Dreams was not easy. Our survival was never guaranteed. When you take on the most powerful forces—Wall Street greed, fossil fuel industry destruction, Big Tech lobbyists, and uber-rich oligarchs who have spent billions upon billions rigging the economy and democracy in their favor—the only bulwark you have is supporters who believe in your work. But here’s the urgent message from me today. It's never been this bad out there. And it's never been this hard to keep us going. At the very moment Common Dreams is most needed, the threats we face are intensifying. We need your support now more than ever. We don't accept corporate advertising and never will. We don't have a paywall because we don't think people should be blocked from critical news based on their ability to pay. Everything we do is funded by the donations of readers like you. When everyone does the little they can afford, we are strong. But if that support retreats or dries up, so do we. Will you donate now to make sure Common Dreams not only survives but thrives? —Craig Brown, Co-founder |
