Donald Trump raises eyebrows with 'great news' US inflation post on Truth Social
Donald Trump touted 'great news' as he claimed inflation is 'way down' and tired to blame Democrat's for May's spike, despite it still being higher than when he returned to office last year
Donald Trump took to Truth Social to deliver "great news" about US inflation, even as his fresh attacks on Iran spark a new price surge.
"Great News America! The Dumocrat caused inflation is way down from what it had been, and we will bring it down still further. MAGA!" Trump declared on his social media platform on Wednesday morning as he attempted blame the Democrats after [inflation spiked to a three-year high ](https://www.themirror.com/money/inflation-report-donald-trump-economy-1879362)in May.
His post came after new data revealed that US inflation eased last month, with prices for gas, clothing, and used cars declining, offering some respite to American households that have faced soaring costs in recent months. Trump also attempted to blame his predecessor Joe Biden, who left office in January 2025, for last months inflation spike on Tuesday. "It's not my fault," he said. "We are putting it to sleep. ... Inflation is way down."
"Remember that for the midterms," he added. However, Trump failed to address in Wednesday's post that inflation has actually increased since he took office last year, rising to 3.5% from 3% in January 2025.
It spiked even higher after his Iran war commenced February 28, when it stood at just 2.4%. Critics were quick to point this out.
"It is simply another lie from the orange ape. Inflation today is higher than when President Biden left office because of Trump’s actions. Fact," one X user wrote in response to Trump's post.
"Everything is at higher prices, especially gas and groceries…Shame on whoever is lying to Trump," a second complained.
"1 month and manipulation doesn't count. The average American knows this. Go get gas," a third said. "It is literally higher than the day you took office," another raged.
The Labor Department reported on Tuesday that consumer prices fell 0.4% between May and June, marking the steepest monthly decline in four years.
It followed a 0.5% increase the prior month. Year-over-year, inflation dropped to 3.5%, down from a 4.2% annual increase in May and below many economists' forecasts. However, oil prices climbed for a second consecutive day Tuesday as the US launched fresh strikes on Iran and Trump unveiled a new blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping channel for roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies.
The uptick threatens to reverse at least some of last month's economic gains. The rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East continues to rattle global markets.
Brent crude oil, the international benchmark, surged 4.6% to $87.13 per barrel on Tuesday. Gas prices have also climbed approximately 6 cents per gallon over the past week, bringing the national average to $3.86 a gallon.
"Today's number is a very good reading, but so much is going to depend on what happens in the Middle East," Kathy Bostjancic, chief economist at Nationwide Financial, said on Tuesday.
