Trump Announces 'Project Freedom' Maritime Operation Despite Iranian Warnings of Ceasefire Violation

President Trump announced 'Project Freedom,' a U.S. military operation to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, calling it a 'humanitarian gesture' for stranded vessels. Iran immediately denounced the move as a violation of the fragile U.S.-Iran ceasefire and warned that any foreign forces entering the strait would be 'targeted and attacked.' Major General Ali Abdollahi stated that Iran would strike U.S. forces attempting to approach the waterway. The operation deployed destroyers, over 100 aircraft, and 15,000 personnel, escalating tensions that led to the U.S. downing seven Iranian boats and Iranian attacks on UAE interests and ships in the strait, putting the ceasefire in jeopardy.

"We warn that any foreign armed force — especially the aggressive U.S. military — if they intend to approach or enter the Strait of Hormuz, will be targeted and attacked." — Iranian Major General Ali Abdollahi's response to Trump's Project Freedom announcement. Note: Trump's direct quote announcing the operation as a 'humanitarian gesture' should be added when available from primary sources.
