Trump announces 25% tariff on EU cars and trucks, accusing bloc of violating trade deal

President Trump announced on Truth Social that he would increase tariffs on cars and trucks imported from the European Union from 15% to 25% starting the following week, accusing the EU of "not complying with our fully agreed to Trade Deal." Trump did not specify what violations he was alleging. The announcement, made on a Friday public holiday in much of Europe, threatened to escalate trade tensions and jolt the global economy. The tariff increase would apply to EU-made vehicles, though vehicles made in the US by EU companies would be exempt. The move appeared to unilaterally tear up part of the Turnberry trade agreement reached between the US and EU in July 2025, which had lowered tariffs to 15%. EU officials responded that they were in full compliance with the agreement and that Trump's accusations were baseless.

"Based on the fact the European Union is not complying with our fully agreed to Trade Deal, I will be raising tariffs to 25%."
