Trump Falsely Claims 'Rampant Cheating' by Noncitizens in State of the Union Address
During his State of the Union address, President Trump pushed for passage of the 'SAVE America Act,' falsely claiming that 'illegal aliens and other unpermitted persons' are voting in 'sacred American elections' and that 'the cheating is rampant.' Multiple fact-checkers and research organizations, including the Brennan Center for Justice and the Cato Institute, have found no evidence of rampant noncitizen voting in federal elections. Studies consistently show noncitizen voting to be extremely rare, with comprehensive research finding only a handful of cases among millions of votes cast. Trump and his allies have never produced evidence to support these claims of widespread election fraud, which he has repeatedly made despite lacking substantiation. The SAVE America Act would impose additional voter registration requirements that experts consider unnecessary barriers to legitimate voting.
