Trump establishes DOJ Division for National Fraud Enforcement with direct presidential reporting

The Trump administration announced the creation of a new Department of Justice division for national fraud enforcement, to be led by a Senate-confirmed Assistant Attorney General who will report directly to President Trump and Vice President JD Vance, bypassing the normal DOJ chain of command. Traditionally, DOJ divisions report through the Deputy Attorney General to maintain independence from White House political influence. The division will enforce federal criminal and civil laws against fraud targeting government programs, federally funded benefits, businesses, nonprofits, and private citizens nationwide. The White House characterized fraud as a "rampant and pervasive problem" in the United States. This structural arrangement raises concerns about the politicization of federal law enforcement and the potential for selective prosecution, as it creates a direct line of authority from the President to prosecutors handling fraud cases that could involve political allies or opponents.
