Thousands protest in Minneapolis at site of Good shooting; police deploy tear gas
Thousands of protesters gathered at Portland Avenue S. and E. 34th St. in Minneapolis, where 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good had been shot and killed by an ICE agent earlier that day. The crowd, which included members of the Minneapolis City Council, chanted 'MPD, KKK, ICE, they're all the same\!' and held moments of silence for Good. Law enforcement fired tear gas and pepper spray; protesters threw snowballs. The location was just blocks from where George Floyd was killed by police in 2020. Protesters barricaded the street overnight for a vigil. The shooting occurred during what DHS called its 'largest immigration enforcement operation ever,' with 2,000+ agents deployed to the Minneapolis area. Governor Tim Walz announced he had begun preparing the Minnesota National Guard in response to the unrest.
