White House publishes website falsely rewriting Jan. 6 attack history
On the fifth anniversary of the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack, the Trump White House published a website presenting a false narrative of the events. The site falsely claimed the 2020 election was 'stolen,' described the violent mob as 'peaceful protesters,' stated there was 'no evidence of armed rebellion or intent to overthrow the government,' and claimed 'Zero law enforcement officers lost their lives'—omitting Officer Brian D. Sicknick's death (who died of strokes the day after the attack) and injuries to 140+ officers (with four officers later dying by suicide). The website blamed Democrats and Capitol Police for the violence and accused Democrats of fabricating an 'insurrection narrative' and staging 'the real insurrection by certifying a fraud-ridden election.' The New York Times called it 'the president's most brazen bid yet to rewrite the history of the Jan. 6 riot with false claims aimed at absolving him of responsibility.'
