ICE tackles and arrests U.S. citizen in Cedar-Riverside for 'looking Somali'; detained despite offering passport
Federal immigration agents chased, tackled, and arrested a 20-year-old U.S. citizen named Mubashir in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis for no apparent reason other than his ethnicity. Officers refused to view his ID before arresting him. He was driven to the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building at Fort Snelling, which houses immigration court, where agents took his fingerprints and only then allowed him to show his ID proving citizenship. He was immediately released after about two hours of detention. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey stated: 'Taken into custody for no reason at all, in clear violation of law and the Constitution of the United States for simply walking down the street and looking like he's Somali.' CAIR-MN reported receiving many calls from Somali U.S. citizens who were arrested or questioned during 'Operation Metro Surge.' Another similar incident occurred the week prior when a Somali woman was detained for 24 hours while running errands. The incidents demonstrated the pattern of racial profiling during the operation that would culminate in the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good one month later.
