Deputy AG Blanche was a former personal attorney to Trump who had defended him in multiple criminal cases before being appointed to DOJ. The meeting's purpose and contents were not disclosed, and it came as Maxwell's lawyers had been pushing for a reduced sentence. One week after this meeting, Maxwell was transferred to a minimum-security prison—a placement almost never granted to sex offenders. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse demanded documents about both the meeting and subsequent transfer, calling it suspicious.
