ICE Conducts Warrantless Raid in Newark, Detaining U.S. Citizens Including Military Veteran
ICE agents raided Ocean Seafood Depot in Newark, NJ without presenting a warrant, detaining workers including U.S. citizens and a Puerto Rican military veteran whose documentation was questioned. Mayor Ras Baraka called it an 'egregious act' in 'plain violation of the Fourth Amendment.' About a dozen agents arrived in unmarked vehicles and demanded documentation from eight workers - four women (all mothers) and four men. Senators Cory Booker and Andy Kim demanded answers from DHS. ICE claimed they 'may encounter U.S. citizens while conducting field work' and that the operation was routine based on a tip about undocumented workers. The incident became emblematic of concerns that mass deportation operations were sweeping up American citizens.
