Ordered to pay E. Jean Carroll $83.3 million in defamation damages

A New York jury ordered Trump to pay $83.3 million to writer E. Jean Carroll for defamatory statements he made about her while president, including $65 million in punitive damages, $11 million for damage to her reputation, and $7.3 million in compensatory damages. The jury deliberated for under three hours after a two-week trial. This was the second major verdict against Trump in Carroll's lawsuits; a previous jury in May 2023 found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll and awarded her $5 million. Trump had repeatedly called Carroll a liar and denied her rape allegation despite the civil jury finding he sexually abused her. The massive punitive damages reflected the jury's determination that Trump's continued attacks were willful and malicious.
