Meta reinstates Trump's Facebook and Instagram; Trump cites 'retribution'

Meta announced on January 25, 2023 that it would restore Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts, suspended since the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack. Meta's president of global affairs, Nick Clegg, wrote that Trump would face "heightened penalties" for future violations, with content removal and suspensions of one month to two years for repeat offenses. Trump responded on Truth Social that Facebook "has lost Billions of Dollars in value since 'deplatforming' your favorite President, me," and wrote that "such a thing should never happen to a sitting President, or anybody else who is not deserving of retribution." The reinstatement, coming as Trump built out his 2024 campaign, drew criticism from Democratic lawmakers including Rep. Adam Schiff.
