National Archives retrieves 15 boxes of presidential records from Mar-a-Lago

After months of negotiations with Trump's lawyers throughout 2021, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) retrieved 15 boxes of presidential records that Trump improperly took to Mar-a-Lago when he left office. NARA later revealed that some of the materials were marked as classified, prompting the agency to contact the Justice Department for guidance. The New York Times reported that archives officials found possible classified material in the boxes, violating the Presidential Records Act which requires all presidential documents to be turned over to the government upon leaving office. This recovery marked the beginning of what would become a criminal investigation into Trump's handling of classified documents.
