Supreme Court rejects Trump's attempt to end DACA in 5-4 defeat

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the Trump administration's attempt to rescind DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) violated the Administrative Procedure Act because it was 'arbitrary and capricious.' Chief Justice Roberts joined the liberal justices in the majority, finding that while the administration had authority to end DACA, it failed to properly consider the hardship to DACA recipients and did not provide adequate reasoning. The ruling protected approximately 650,000 young immigrants from deportation. NPR reported the decision was 'for DREAMers, against Trump' while Politico called it 'a major victory' for immigrants. The decision left open the possibility of future action to end DACA but required following proper administrative procedures. It was Trump's second major Supreme Court defeat in a week.
