Supreme Court rules LGBT workers protected under Title VII in 6-3 decision Trump opposed

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects gay, lesbian, and transgender employees from workplace discrimination based on sex. Justice Gorsuch, a Trump appointee, wrote the majority opinion stating 'it is impossible to discriminate against a person for being homosexual or transgender without discriminating against that individual based on sex.' The ruling was a major defeat for the Trump administration, which had argued in court that Title VII did not cover sexual orientation or gender identity. NPR called it a 'major victory to LGBTQ employees' while employment law experts noted it extended protections to 'all employers covered by Title VII' nationwide. The decision contradicted the Trump administration's position and expanded civil rights protections Trump had worked to roll back.
