Ordered to pay $2 million for misusing Trump Foundation charity

A New York judge ordered Trump to pay $2 million in damages for illegally using his Trump Foundation charity for political purposes. The court found Trump used foundation funds to settle business disputes, promote Trump hotels, and purchase a portrait of himself. Most egregiously, during the 2016 campaign, Trump used a televised charity fundraiser ostensibly for veterans to boost his campaign, funneling donations through the foundation while his campaign controlled their distribution. The judge found 'a shocking pattern of illegality' including self-dealing and coordination with the campaign. Trump was also required to shut down the foundation. The foundation admitted to violating campaign finance laws and tax rules. Trump had to personally pay the $2 million to legitimate charities. The settlement came as Trump faced impeachment, adding another finding of illegal conduct to his record.
