Suspends INF Treaty with Russia

The Trump administration formally announced the U.S. would suspend its obligations under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, beginning a 6-month withdrawal process. Secretary of State Pompeo accused Russia of violating the 1987 treaty by deploying missiles with ranges prohibited under the agreement. The treaty, negotiated by Reagan and Gorbachev, had helped end the Cold War arms race. Critics warned the withdrawal could trigger a new nuclear arms race in Europe and undermine global arms control.
