Gold Star widow says Trump's call "made me cry even worse"

Myeshia Johnson, widow of Sgt. La David Johnson killed in Niger, publicly stated that Trump's condolence call made her "cry even worse" because he couldn't remember her husband's name and said "he knew what he signed up for." Trump then attacked Rep. Frederica Wilson who witnessed the call, calling her a liar. Chief of Staff John Kelly gave an emotional defense of Trump but also attacked Wilson with false claims about her past statements. The controversy revealed Trump's inability to show genuine empathy and his instinct to attack grieving families rather than apologize. Trump never apologized to the widow.

"The president said that he knew what he signed up for, but it hurts anyway." — Myeshia Johnson describing Trump's call, ABC interview October 23, 2017
