Celebrates AHCA passage in Rose Garden despite bill contradicting "cover everybody" promise
Trump hosted a Rose Garden celebration after the House passed the American Health Care Act by a narrow 217-213 vote, calling the legislation "incredibly well crafted" and praising Republicans for passing a "great plan." During the event, he exclaimed "I'm president! Hey! I'm president! Can you believe it?" Yet the bill directly contradicted his January 2017 promise to provide "insurance for everybody," as the Congressional Budget Office would later estimate on May 24 that the AHCA would cause 23 million Americans to lose health insurance by 2026. Trump had repeatedly promised during the campaign to "take care of everybody" and ensure no one would "die on the street." The celebration proved premature—Senate Republicans immediately announced they would write their own bill instead of voting on the House version, and weeks later Trump privately called the AHCA "mean, mean, mean" in a closed-door meeting with senators.
