FBI Director Comey publicly confirms investigation into Trump-Russia ties
In explosive testimony before the House Intelligence Committee, FBI Director James Comey publicly confirmed for the first time that the FBI was investigating whether there was coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia to interfere in the 2016 election. Comey also directly refuted Trump's wiretapping claims, stating there was "no information that supports" Trump's accusation that Obama ordered surveillance of Trump Tower. This was the first public confirmation that Trump's campaign was under federal investigation. The testimony placed an active criminal investigation squarely on Trump's doorstep and set up the eventual appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
"I have been authorized to confirm that the FBI is investigating the Russian government's efforts to interfere in the 2016 election, including any links between the Trump campaign and the Russian government." — March 20, 2017 testimony before House Intelligence Committee
