Proposes budget slashing Meals on Wheels, arts, and programs for vulnerable Americans
Trump released his first budget blueprint, which proposed massive cuts to programs serving vulnerable Americans while dramatically increasing military spending. The budget would eliminate or drastically reduce funding for Meals on Wheels (which feeds homebound elderly), the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, PBS, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and community development block grants. The budget cut the State Department by 28% and the EPA by 31% while increasing defense spending by $54 billion. White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney defended the cuts, saying "We're no longer going to measure compassion by the number of programs or the number of people on those programs." The Meals on Wheels cuts sparked particular outrage, as the program serves 2.4 million seniors. The cruelty of cutting food for the elderly while increasing military spending epitomized Trump's priorities.
