Trump falsely accuses Obama of wiretapping Trump Tower
Trump tweeted without evidence that President Obama had his "wires tapped" at Trump Tower during the campaign, calling it "Nixon/Watergate" and a "new low." He offered no proof for this explosive claim. FBI Director Comey and NSA Director Rogers later testified under oath that no such wiretap occurred. The Justice Department confirmed no evidence supported Trump's claim. White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer later tried to walk back the claim, saying Trump didn't mean it literally. The baseless accusation appeared designed to deflect from the growing Russia investigation and smear his predecessor.
"Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my 'wires tapped' in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!" — Twitter, March 4, 2017
