Mocks Gold Star Muslim mother and claims he’s “made a lot of sacrifices”
After Khizr Khan denounced Trump’s proposed Muslim ban during his Democratic convention speech, standing beside his silent wife Ghazala while honoring their fallen son, Capt. Humayun Khan, Trump responded in a July 30 ABC interview by suggesting Ghazala might not have been “allowed” to speak because of her faith and insisting that he himself had “made a lot of sacrifices” by creating jobs and building projects. CNN, NPR, NBC, BBC, Vox, and other outlets document how he implied that a Gold Star mother’s silence reflected Muslim oppression and equated his business ventures with the death of a soldier in combat. The exchange crystallized his willingness to smear grieving Muslim Americans as props of their religion, to belittle the family of a fallen service member, and to treat ordinary self-promotion as equivalent to military sacrifice.
