First TV ad uses Morocco footage to misrepresent U.S.-Mexico border
Trump released his first television campaign ad, titled 'Great Again,' which featured footage of migrants crossing a border that his campaign claimed showed the U.S.-Mexico border. In reality, the footage showed African migrants streaming over a border fence between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Melilla, more than 5,000 miles away. When confronted, campaign manager Corey Lewandowski claimed the deception was intentional, stating 'The footage was intentional. It's intended to demonstrate the impact of an open border.' The ad also promised 'a temporary shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until we can figure out what's going on,' to 'build a wall on our southern border that Mexico will pay for,' and to 'quickly cut the head off ISIS and take their oil.' Trump committed to spending at least $2 million per week on the ad campaign.
