In the days around Dec. 2, 2015, as fear over Paris and the San Bernardino attack mounted, Trump told interviewers and crowds that he would “strongly consider” closing certain mosques and blocking Syrian refugees from entering the United States, presenting mosque closures and refugee bans as serious options without evidence they would improve security and laying rhetorical groundwork for his later formal call to bar Muslims from entering the country.
