Endorses Muslim database/registry: 'I would certainly implement that. Absolutely.'
In an NBC News interview between campaign town halls in Newton, Iowa, Trump endorsed creating a database to track Muslims in the United States. When reporter Vaughn Hillyard asked if he would implement a database system tracking Muslims, Trump replied 'I would certainly implement that. Absolutely.' Asked about legal implementation, he said 'They have to be — they have to be.' Trump added 'There should be a lot of systems, beyond databases. We should have a lot of systems.' When repeatedly pressed on how this differed from Nazi registration of Jews, Trump deflected four times saying 'You tell me.' He framed the proposal around immigration enforcement, claiming it 'would stop people from coming in illegally.' The proposal came days after the November 13 Paris attacks and sparked widespread condemnation as unconstitutional religious discrimination echoing fascist regimes.
