Questions Ted Cruz's presidential eligibility over Canadian birth on Cruz's launch day

On the day Sen. Ted Cruz announced his presidential campaign, Trump — the most prominent promoter of the false claim that President Obama was not born in the United States — questioned whether the Canadian-born Cruz was eligible for the presidency. "It's a hurdle. Somebody could certainly look at it very seriously," he told MyFoxNY. Legal scholars broadly agreed Cruz, born to an American mother, was a natural-born citizen; PolitiFact noted Trump, then exploring his own bid, could gain standing to sue Cruz by entering the race. Trump revived the eligibility line against Cruz in January 2016 as they battled for the nomination.

"He was born in Canada. If you know and when we all studied our history lessons, you are supposed to be born in this country, so I just don't know how the courts will rule on this." Quote verified against source
