Three weeks after Republicans won control of the Senate in the 2014 midterms, and days before Obama announced executive action on immigration, Trump tweeted "Fact – Amnesty lowers wages and invites more lawlessness. Obama has unilaterally cancelled any chance of immigration reform." Trump falsely framed Obama's deferred action program as "amnesty" (it wasn't—it was temporary relief from deportation, not a path to citizenship) and claimed without evidence that it "lowers wages" and "invites lawlessness." The tweet positioned Trump against any immigration relief and blamed Obama for killing reform, when Republicans had blocked comprehensive immigration legislation.
